Tulum is located at the end of the Cancun - Riviera Maya corridor, which is the furthest location that most tour buses from Cancun and the Riviera Maya will go. Tulum is one of the most impressive and picturesque of all Mayan ruins due to its magnificent location on the edge of a cliff. It is also the only Mayan site with a beach. You may wish to bring your camera to capture its spectacular views.

In Mayan, Tulum means "wall" and is a very recent construction, as ruins go. The original name for the site was Zama or "place of the dawn." The city was likely founded around the year 564 AD. During the 13th century, Tulum had links with the Mayan city of Mayapan, about 240 km (150 miles) to the west, and continued its trading relationship until the Spaniards landed on the Yucatan in the early 1500's. The Mayans continued to occupy the site for several decades after the Conquest, longer than other locations on the coast.
