Map Reservation

Izamal is one of the most attractive towns in the Yucatan and has many names. Known as the Yellow City, the Golden City, and the City of Three Cultures, its houses and arcades are painted in yellow-ochre giving it a unique feel and charm. The most impressive and dominant building in town is the Franciscan monastery of San Antonio de Padua.

Izamal was built on top of an earlier Mayan city. Excavations here have been limited because of the existing Spanish-built structures. However, it is clear that it was one of the oldest Mayan settlements, occupied from around 300 BC until the Spanish Conquest in the early 1500's AD. At around 600 AD, it had risen to become a powerful city. A sacbe (white road) was built between Izamal and the city of Ake, which was its ally.

Close to the monastery, the Kinich Kak Mo pyramid can still be visited and it is possible to climb onto several levels. This pyramid consists of base with another whole pyramid on top.

Locations to pick: Lagoon, cenote, a Mayan community, a cave or cavern.
