One of the most beautiful Colonial Cities in Mexico. The city, especially the Historic Center, has maintained its Spanish colonial layout with narrow cobblestone streets, red clay tile covering roofs, and iron made balconies with flowers.

San Cristobal de las Casas is a city and municipality located in the Central Highlands region of Chiapas, therefore, the municipality is mostly made up of mountainous terrain, but the city sits in a small valley surrounded by hills called Jovel.

In the past, it was the political capital of the state of Chiapas, but it moved to Tuxtla Gutierrez at the end of 19th Century. However, nowadays it is the "cultural capital" of the state.

In 2003, San Cristobal de las Casas was designated Pueblo Magico or Magical Village. Pueblos Magicos is an initiative led by Mexico's Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR), in conjunction with other federal and state agencies promote a series of towns around the country that offer visitors a "magical experience", by reason of their natural beauty, cultural riches, or historical relevance. The Mexico Tourism Board acknowledges that Mexico's magical element, and not only its sun and beaches, is what keeps many tourists coming back. Thus, they created the 'Pueblos Magicos' program to recognize places across the country that imbue certain characteristics that make them unique and historically significant.

There is always something being celebrated in the city, mostly religious celebrations acentuated with Fireworks.
