Excavation of Ek Balam started in 1998, and the results were impressive. Some of the finest and most unusual Mayan sculptures were unearth in this small site.

The Mayans occupied Ek Balam for one of the longest known periods, from about 100 BC until the Conquests in the early 1500's AD. According to some records from 1579, the settlement was founded by a lord named Ek Balam. Many of the most impressive structures were built very late, around 800 AD, when the powerful Ukit-Kan-Lek-Tok ruled. His tomb is one of the most impressive discoveries uncovered there.

Although the excavated site covers only the ceremonial core, the city was much larger. Sacbe (white roads) have been discovered and lead in different directions to other cities.
